A Song to My Unknown God

A song to my unknown God
Who fashions my bones
and gives me mouth to mouth
for each breath

Who compels to dancing my atoms
splitting and rejoining them
in each moment

A song to my unknown God
Who walks the very earth
my feet tread
Who climbs the trees
reaching toward the very sun
from which I shade my eyes

Where are we going, my unknown God?
both birthed from wombs
within your womb
How you sustain us.

Somewhere There Must Be a Future by Wolfgang Lettl 2005

Darkness is My Closest Friend

Darkness is my closest friend
murmurs the poet given up on God
and sends this bitter sonnet
breath raised as smoke
breaking free from incense
A throne catches its winds
and sets a table before it.
Some split bread for the belly
some wine for the ache
As a whisper,
the throne condescends
sits in the ash
cut to the bone
and sings the tune with him.
